Embark on an unforgettable journey along the Shimanami Kaido, a scenic route of approximately 60 kilometers across nine bridges and six islands, connecting the cities of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. The Shimanami Kaido, often associated with cycling, also provides a scenic drive with stunning ocean views and unique stops to discover. Whether you choose to explore the islands by bike or car rental, take your time and enjoy each destination.

1) Mukaishima | 向島

Overlook the horizon from the Takamiyama Viewpoint and stop by USHIO CHOCOLATL, a local chocolatier. Each chocolate piece is carefully crafted based on the distinct energy the owners experience during their personal interactions with the cacao farmers. 2) Innoshima | 因島

Take in the view from the Shiratakiyama Observation Deck and stop by Hassakuya, a local Japanese confectionary store. The signature "daifuku" (a Japanese sweet) is handmade at the store, and the fruit encapsulated in the center is also grown on the island. See the lineup here.

3) Ikuchijima | 生口島

Visit the Kousanji Temple built by Kosanji Kozo, a former businessman in Osaka, as a tribute to his late mother, an expression of gratitude for her kindness. Stop by Dolce Ice Cream to enjoy gelato made from island-grown fruits. The island is famous for its lemons and is the largest lemon producer in Japan.

4) Ohmishima | 大三島

Draw power and energy from the 2,600-year-old tree near the Oyamazumi Shrine. Stop for refreshing drinks at Limone, a local store operated by citrus farmers. The couple relocated from Tokyo to follow their dream of producing an alcoholic beverage using the organic citrus fruits they would grow themselves.

5) Hakatajima | 伯方島

Marvel the view from Hirakiyama Park, especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season. Visit Patisserie T's Cafe Tamaya near the coast, and enjoy delicious sweets while you soak in the fantastic ocean views in front of you.

6) Ohshima | 大島

Stop by the iconic observation deck at Kirosan Park, which offers a breathtaking view of the bridges you crossed on your way here. Don't forget to taste the sea salt gelato at the foot of the park.
