It's summer! With sunny skies and bright sunshine, I feel a strong pull toward the ocean. I love watching the waves glitter under the sun. In Japan, some stations have become well-known due to their proximity to the sea, promising breathtaking views waiting to be captured. You may know the picturesque Shimonada Station. However, there are countless others with equally mesmerizing views.

There is a website called Seaside Stations, which is a collection of stations in Japan close to the ocean or sea. Below are five selections. You can go to the website to check out other stations. If you select the station, you'll find multiple pictures which provide an excellent overview of the location, even if you can't read Japanese.

Hitachi Station - Ibaraki

As soon as you step foot into the station, you'll be greeted with stunning panoramic ocean views through its glass walls. The station was designed by Kazuyo Sejima, an architect from Hitachi City, and won the Brunel Award for international railroad design in 2014. There's also a cafe space to enjoy a meal with this breathtaking view.  

Transportation from Tokyo
Take the JR Limited Express Train "Hitachi" from Ueno Station.
Train Ride: ~1.5 hrs

Ohmisaki Station - Nagasaki

This open platform station offers unobstructed views of the Ariake Sea. The absence of buildings and fences allows you to appreciate the sea's changing views. Witness the vast expanse of blue waters during high tide or admire the beautiful sand patterns created by the shallow mud flats during low tide.

Transportation from Nagasaki Station
Take the JR Rapid Seaside Liner to Isahaya Station.
From Isahaya Station, take the local Shimabara Railway to Ohmisaki Station.
Total train ride: ~1.5 hrs

Yoroi Station - Hyogo

Upon reaching the small station, you can journey through the underground passageway to a hill overlooking a charming fishing village and port. Take a moment to relax on the modest bench and appreciate the stunning emerald-green waters.

Transportation from Kyoto Station
Take the JR Limited Express to Kinosakionsen Station.
From Kinosakionsen Station, take the JR local train to Yoroi Station.
Total train ride: ~3.5 hrs

Chiwata Station - Nagasaki

As you stand on the platform, you can take in the breathtaking view of Omura Bay. The charming wooden station building has maintained its nostalgic Showa-era look. Its wooden-framed windows offer a view of the tranquil waters, particularly popular during sunset.

Transportation from Nagasaki Station
Take the JR Local train to Chiwata Station.

Wabuka Station - Wakayama

Discover the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The unstaffed station offers various angles to enjoy the mesmerizing blue ocean, such as from the platform, waiting room, station entrance, and nearby beach.

Transportation from Osaka Station
Take the JR Limited Express Kuroshio train to Shirahama Station.
From Shirahama Station, take the Local train to Wabuka Station.
Total train ride: ~3.5 hrs
